He had served three complete voyages and part of a fourth in the EIC service between 1822 and 1831.]

Grey once again escaped with only a severe reprimand respecting his future conduct & behaviour.]

At 10 AM [I] Boarded the Ship. Some hands belonging to the Dock Company employed levelling the Hold for Water Butts. Two Lumpers employed getting the Butts started & rolling them alongside. Officers on board: 1st & 3rd. Mr Workman, Surveyor, joined the Ship.

 

Friday 4th January 1828

S. Westerly winds and gloomy weather. Some hands employed in the Hold filling water. No Cargo alongside. Received 20 Chaldrons Coals. Six Lumpers employed landing the Butts. Draft of Water: Forward 14[ft] 5[in]; Aft 15[ft] 3[in]. Officers on board: 1st & 3rd.

Friday 18th January 1828 – Sailing down River Thames to Northfleet Hope (Gravesend)

S. Westerly winds with rain in the first. At ½ past noon, hauled out of the Docks and was taken in tow by two Steam Boats. At 5 PM Anchored in Northfleet Hope with the best Bower abreast the Moorings. Reeved [does it mean veered?] away to 40 Fathoms. Captn Innes and all Officers on board. Saturday 16th February 1828

S. West winds & fine weather. AM Began paying the Ship. Employed taking in Passengers & their Baggage. PM Mr Culmer, Pilot, came on board & took charge of the Ship.

 

Sunday 17th February 1828 – Moored at Northfleet Hope/Gravesend

Light airs & fine weather. AM Crossed Top Gallant Yards; and otherwise employed preparing to take the Ship from the Moorings. Delivered 5 Tons Potatoes.

 

Monday 18th February 1828 – Anchored at the Nore

Southerly winds & hazy weather. At 10 AM The Soho and Magnet Steam Boats lashed alongside & took the Ship from the Moorings. At 3 PM Passed Lee Middle, least water 6 fathoms. At 5 PM Brought up on the Warp in 8½ fathoms. Nore Light, W ½ W [sic]. Veered to 60 fathms on the Chain. Paid the last of the Crew.

 

Tuesday 19th February 1828 – Anchored in the Downs

Light Westerly winds & fine weather. At 10 AM Weighed and was taken in Tow by the Steam Boats, at 2 PM Crossed the Flats. At 6 PM Passed the North Foreland, and at 8 PM Anchored in the Downs in 10 Fathomswith the best Bower, veered away 100 Fathms Chain. Bearings: South Foreland Light, SW ½ W; Gull Light, NE by E. At 8 PM The Purser joined the Ship with the Company’s Dispatches.

 

Wednesday 20th February 1828 – Anchored in the Downs

S.S.W winds & fine weather. At 8 AM The Company’s Agent came off and mustered the Ship’s Company. People employed under the Boatswain preparing for Sea. PM Took in third reef of the Top Sails & reefed the Courses.

 

Thursday 21st February 1828 – Working out of the Downs

S.S. East winds & fine weather. At 10 AM Weighed & worked out of the Downs. The Company’s Surveyor left the Ship. At noon, rounded the South Foreland. Water on board: 59,292 Gallons. “This Log contains remarks of 12 Hours, and ends at Noon to commence Sea Log.”
