Wind Westerly and fine Weather. At 6 AM, Weighed when the Albionand SwiftsureSteam Packets took us in tow. At noon, brought up in Blackwall reach and lashed alongside the Hull [i.e. hulk].Unbent sails &c. All Officers on board.  [Last entry in log – Ed.]

HERE THE JOURNAL ENDS SOMEWHAT ABRUBTLY.  The crew – including Michael Spinks – were discharged three days later, on 8thApril 1826 (ledger).  A small number of officers remained aboard for several weeks to oversee unstowing of the hold and the discharging of cargo to the warehouses and de-rigging of the vessel.

According to the daily ‘distance sailed’ values given in the log (plus some added by me manually by summing the ‘speed in knots’ column), it appears the total voyage distance was: 33,230 nautical miles.  The ‘sea log’ itself covers 435 days (from 22ndJanuary 1825 to 1stApril 1826), of which 280 days (64%) were spent actually sailing, i.e. at sea, the remainder (nearly 36%) spent moored/stationary/in port (this does NOT include the time spent loading/unloading the ship in the Thames).  This gives an average speed for Repulseduring the entire voyage of 4.94 knots.

[1]From Wikipedia: Pulau Serangoon, alternatively known as ConeyIsland, is a 45-hectare island located off the northeastern coast of Singapore, between Pulau Ubin to its northeast and the mainland to its southwest.

In an 1825 survey of the coastal areas around Singapore by Crawfurd, Forrester, Lt. Jackson and Dr Johnson, Rabbit and Coney(meaning rabbit) islets were mentioned. An anonymous writer who wrote the Singapore Chronicle article noted on the sighting of the two islets, namely Rabbit and Coney that: "The whimsical application to these two islets suggests some observations upon the fantastic names which have been given to places in this part of the world; not only by European navigators but by the natives of the country themselves. There is scarcely any sense or meaning in the best of them. Pray, what is the difference between a rabbit and the coney?"

No. Christian name(s)  Surname  Rank "Casualties" Transcriber's Extra Notes
1 [Captain] John Paterson, Esq'r. Commander    This was apparently the last voyage Captain Paterson undertook in the Hon. Company's Maritime Service. Assume he retired a wealthy man, having first commanded the East India Company Ship "Duke of Montrose" in 1804, and completed (at least) eight voyages as Commander. From news column in the London 'Morning Post' of 23rd May 1825 it seems he became a father (again?) when his wife gave birth to a son, in Lower Cadogan-place, on 18th May 1825 - while Captain Paterson was navigating the "Repulse" across the Indian Ocean to Benkulen.
2 Mr Edw'd [Edward] Foord Chief Mate   Mr FOORD apparently rose to command the Hon. Company's Ship 'Herefordshire' on her final voyage for the East India Company, 1833-34.

30 John Davis Boats[wain's] Mate   Is he the same Boatswain's Mate named John DAVIS (alias DAVIDSON, alias NICHOLSON), who appears in the printed List of EIC Maritime Servants awarded "Poplar Fund Pensions" (between 1793-1833) on 14th March 1821, for a one-off receipt of £15 - on the grounds that he "give up all claim to a Pension on the Fund". Also, it looks very likely he is the same John DAVIS who received compensation for his services as a BOATSWAIN when the Company's Maritime Service was abolished in 1834. (No service statement exists for him, so we cannot be entirely certain.)

111 John Murray Ord'y [Ordinary] Seaman Died 10th September 1825  This death would have occurred shortly before the ship arrived in China, while anchored off the Island of Lintin. There is no entry relating to his death in the log itself - nor of his 'committal to the Deep' / burial.
112 Cha's [Charles] Baldry Ord'y [Ordinary] Seaman

121 James Fitzgerald [2nd] Ord'y [Ordinary] Seaman   Confined in Irons 7th February 1825 for drunkenness and abusive language - he was "set at liberty" later same day on promise of future good conduct. Log calls him James FITZGERALD (2nd), Ordinary Seaman - which presumably means the 2nd man of that name on the crew list there is nothing else to distinguish between them!
122 John Durant Ord'y [Ordinary] Seaman
123 Rob't [Robert] Davidson Ord'y [Ordinary] Seaman

142 Hugh Logan Landsman   Entered ship at St Helena (outward-bound), 13th April 1825 - ledger.
143 Lewis Lucas Landsman Left at St Helena 3rd February 1826 Cannot find him in ship's ledger - assume they were unable to pay him since he was left on an island in So uthern Atlantic! A(nother?) man of this name appears as no. 12 on passenger list, embarked at Gravesend 12th Jan 1825, but is stated to have "landed at St Helena 16th March 1825" (with the other passengers outward bound). Wonder if this is a mistake and that he decided during the outward voyage to try his hand at being a sailor, and completed the rest of the voyage as such before being left at St Helena homeward-bound? It's not possible to fully prove this, as the two entries relating to Lewis Lucas contradict each other.
144 Rob't [Robert] McGregor Quartermaster   Entered ship 8th August 1825 at Penang - ledger. He was probably replacing another Quartermaster (Robertson) sent home in March 1825 at St Helena.
145 John Lambert Seaman   Entered ship 13th Oct 1825 at China - ledger.
[END - No. 145 is the last crew member]
Number highlighted means that the individual died.
Number highlighted means that the individual did not complete the voyage for some other reason.

ANALYSIS/NOTES
Only seven deaths occurred among the crew during the voyage, which indicates a remarkably healthy crew, no doubt due to general cleanliness and good fortune in not being infected with a contagious disease at one of the ports of call. Somewhat ironically, the surgeon was the first man to die from some unknown (presumably natural) cause just prior to leaving Benkulen in early July; one midshipman was left sick in hospital at Singapore where he died in September; and two other seamen only died of what would be termed 'natural causes' (one of uncertain casuse since his death is not recorded in the log itself). The other three men all died by accident, either by falling overboard and drowning or in one case falling from the yard and hitting the deck.
In total, only fifteen of 145 crewmen did not return to England aboard Repulse. Of these, there appears to have been only five deaths, while two others were sent home by other ships, two joined a Royal Navy ship at Penang, one Midshipman was left sick at Singapore (where he subsequently died in hospital), two men "ran", one was promoted Carpenter of another Company ship, and one was left on the return leg of the voyage at St Helena (see notes for Passenger Lewis Lucas).

Volunteeres from HCS Macqueen are here. My ancestor George Fox was a seaman on that Macqueen trip. I wonder if George was on any other voyages.
